Ottawa,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0September 23, 2022<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>– Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, along with Andrea Dicks<\/span>, President of Community Foundations of Canada<\/span> (CFC), and Mary W. Rowe<\/span>, President and CEO of the Canadian Urban Institute<\/span> (CUI), announced funding for over 400 new projects under the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative<\/a> (CHCI).<\/p>\n

The additional funding will help communities adapt public spaces and local services in a way that meets people’s needs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Community Foundations of Canada’s<\/span> interactive map and results page<\/a> highlights the projects and the great work being done within our communities.<\/p>\n

The Foundation of Greater Montr\u00e9al was thus able to support a total of 71 different projects, across all areas of its territory and every sector of intervention covered by the program. This direct support to organizations on the ground corresponds to a global investment of over $4.3 million in the Greater Montreal community.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0The CHCI allowed us to take stock of the passion, talent and resourcefulness of the many organizations and citizens groups who committed themselves to improving their living environments by making them more accessible, sustainable, safe and welcoming. The Greater Montreal community has drawn many lessons from the pandemic, and the innovative projects FGM scored are a tangible proof of that. We hope these projects will live on and become an inspiration for our entire community, as we are starting to turn the page and build the future\u00a0\u00bb said Karel Mayrand, President and CEO of the Foundation of Greater Montr\u00e9al.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0The pandemic prompted us to find innovative ways to continue socializing and accessing services while staying safe. With an additional $30 million<\/span> investment from the Government of Canada<\/span>, more than 400 new projects are being delivered to help communities of all sizes, in every region of our country, upgrade their gathering spaces. These projects will continue to assist communities in navigating through recovery and build economic resilience across the country,\u00a0\u00bb said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.<\/p>\n

During this current phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, local governments and community partners across the country are still taking precautions and are continuing to adapt their spaces and services to keep residents safe and healthy, support economic recovery, create jobs, and build vibrant, resilient communities.<\/p>\n

By investing in infrastructure, the Government of Canada<\/span> is growing our country’s economy, increasing the resiliency of our communities, and improving the lives of Canadians.<\/p>\n

  • To date, the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative (CHCI) has provided over $60 million<\/span> towards more than 1,000 projects to build safer spaces and ensure a higher quality of life for people across the country.<\/li>\n
  • The CHCI was created to help communities adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic and create safe ways for residents to access services and enjoy the outdoors.<\/li>\n
  • Eligible projects under CHCI ranged from $5,000<\/span> and $250,000<\/span> and fell under three main themes: creating safe and vibrant public spaces, improving mobility options, and digital solutions.<\/li>\n
  • The Canada Healthy Communities Initiative is meant to complement other measures being taken by the Government of Canada<\/span> to support communities to address immediate infrastructure needs resulting from the pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
